Jake Chandler Reflects on His Butler Career
By Cody Morris
Later this summer, Tailgate TV will premiere Season 3 with an exclusive interview featuring Butler graduate and Baker University signee Jake Chandler.
During the nearly hour-long conversation, Chandler reflected on his athletic career, discussed the moments that shaped him as both a player and person, and shared what lies ahead as he prepares for the next chapter of his football journey.
While viewers will have to wait for the full episode to hear the entire conversation, one theme emerged almost immediately: Jake Chandler’s success was never built solely on athletic ability.
When fans think back on Chandler’s career, they’ll likely remember the highlight plays. They’ll remember the interceptions, the long touchdown catches, the kickoff returns and the moments that seemed to define every Friday night.
What many may not have seen were the hours that came before those moments.
Throughout the interview, Chandler repeatedly pointed to preparation as one of the biggest factors behind his success. Early in his high school career, older players encouraged him to begin studying film, a habit that quickly became part of his routine. The more film he watched, the more the game slowed down. Tendencies became easier to identify. Situations that once felt unpredictable started to make sense before the ball was ever snapped.
“It helps recognize formations,” Chandler explained. “You start recognizing what’s coming. I was like, ‘Oh, I recognize this formation in the game. I know what’s about to come.’”
It was that preparation, Chandler said, that often placed him in position to make the kinds of plays Butler fans came to expect. Over time, the interceptions, pass breakups and game-changing moments became so routine that some were almost taken for granted — a testament to just how consistently Chandler found himself around the football.
Whether it was jumping a passing route, finding an opening on offense or making a game-changing play on special teams, Chandler developed a reputation as a player who always seemed to be around the football. Opposing teams eventually took notice, often adjusting game plans to avoid challenging him directly.
The interview also explored Chandler’s path to football itself.
Despite becoming known primarily for his success on the gridiron, football was not always the sport he envisioned as his future. Growing up in an athletic family, Chandler first gravitated toward basketball before later discovering a love for baseball. Football entered the picture later, but once it did, everything changed.
“I fell in love with it,” Chandler said. “After that, I was watching every NFL game, college game, anything I could. I just fell in love with it.”
That passion helped produce a career filled with memorable moments, from dramatic road victories and game-changing interceptions to unforgettable Friday nights in a Butler uniform. During the interview, Chandler laughed while recalling some of the biggest plays of his career, including late-game heroics, highlight-reel interceptions and the thrill of hearing a crowd erupt after a big play.
Like most successful athletes, however, Chandler’s journey wasn’t without obstacles.
A wrist injury sidelined him for much of one season and threatened to halt the momentum he had built. Later, shoulder issues created another challenge. Yet throughout the interview, Chandler spoke less about the injuries themselves and more about his determination to get back on the field.
“I was begging them to let me play,” Chandler recalled while discussing his return from the wrist injury. “I had to have it wrapped up, but I wanted to be out there.”
That mindset appeared repeatedly throughout the conversation. Growing up with older siblings helped develop a toughness that carried over into athletics, while years of competition taught him how to push through adversity. More importantly, Chandler understood the responsibility that came with being one of the players his teammates depended on.
This fall, Chandler will continue his football career at Baker University, where every player was among the best athletes on their high school team. The physical advantages that separate players at one level become much smaller at the next. Chandler understands that reality.
“When you get there, everybody is athletic,” he said. “You have to find something that separates you.”
For Chandler, that separation has never been solely about speed, strength or natural ability. It has been about preparation, discipline and a willingness to put in work long before the lights come on Friday night.
Those qualities helped build an impressive career at Butler. Soon, they will travel with him to Baker University as he begins the next chapter of his football journey.
The full Tailgate TV Season 3 premiere featuring Jake Chandler is expected to air in the coming weeks.
