On Friday night inside the Bears Den, the Butler Bears varsity boys basketball squad squared off with the Leeton Bulldogs in a physical contest that remained undecided until the final seconds.

Leeton struck first with a long-range three to grab an early 3–0 advantage, but Butler answered quickly. Braxton attacked the rim for a strong finish, and another Bears basket followed to put Butler ahead 4–3. The two teams traded scores for much of the opening quarter before Carter drilled a timely triple to break an offensive lull and ignite a 5–2 Butler run to close the period.

The second quarter opened with Butler trailing 15–13. Leeton added a quick jumper, but Carter answered immediately with a driving floater of his own. Turnovers began to mount on both sides, and Wisdom took advantage, tying the game at 17 before converting a layup off another Bulldogs miscue to give Butler a 19–17 edge. Lucas Davidson continued the Bears’ momentum with a strong post score, and Martin followed by knocking down a basket to stretch the lead to 23–17. After Leeton briefly responded, Wisdom stayed hot, collecting another loose ball and finishing at the rim. Butler closed the half on a 4–0 run to take a 29–26 lead into intermission.

Coming out of the locker room, the Bulldogs grabbed a quick basket, but Butler answered with a score and a pair of free throws to maintain control. The third quarter settled into a physical, back-and-forth stretch, with Jake Chandler repeatedly battling through contact to earn trips to the free-throw line, something that proved difficult for the Bears throughout the night. Despite the uneven rhythm, Butler carried a slim 42–41 lead into the final quarter.

Leeton opened the fourth with an empty trip at the line but soon found momentum, stringing together a quick 4–0 run to move ahead 45–42. Chandler responded with a smooth finger roll to trim the deficit to one. With three minutes remaining, Wisdom reclaimed the lead for Butler at 48–47. Following a Butler timeout, Chandler again fought through contact for a tough layup, and after a defensive stop, Carter added a basket to push the Bears ahead 52–47, forcing a Bulldogs timeout.

The final minute was chaotic. Chandler calmly stepped to the free-throw line and knocked down two clutch shots to extend the lead. Leeton answered with a post score and used a timeout with 40 seconds remaining to pull within five. The Bears Den erupted in boos when moments later another whistle went against Butler, handing the Bulldogs possession. Leeton capitalized with a three-pointer, cutting the margin to 54–52 with nine seconds left.

Chandler returned to the stripe and converted the first attempt. The second bounced off, but Wisdom came up with a massive offensive rebound to help seal the outcome. Butler closed out the final seconds and emerged from the Bears Den with a gritty 56–52 victory.

Jake Chandler led all scorers on the night with 22 points.
